Translating Activism Writing Workshop
This is a cross-cultural writing workshop with Dalit Author Kalyani Thakur where a series of exercises and discussions with authors, translators and scholars will help you to craft your own short translated reworkings of Thakur’s writing that express your own forms of political commitment and social identity.
Writing by Dalit (formerly known as 'Untouchable') authors is one of the most radical forms of creative activism currently sweeping South Asia. Join us for this unique opportunity to work with Bengali Dalit feminist author Kalyani Thakur and translator Sipra Mukherjee as we explore the ‘bridge translation’ method as a means to translate the activist potential of Dalit writing across languages and cultures.
Both Dalit literature and the ‘bridge translation’ method will be explained at the start of the session, so no prior knowledge is necessary. During this afternoon-long workshop, you will have the opportunity to work on a series of exercises and discussions with authors, translators and scholars who will help you to craft your own short translated reworkings of Thakur’s writing that express your own forms of political commitment and social identity. Through this workshop, we will reflect on the ways that radical literary potential can be translated across languages, cultures and contexts.
