Gallery Talk: Scarlett Cannon and Juliana Sissons

Scarlett Cannon and Juliana Sissons join us for a special one-off gallery talk. Both were heavily involved in the vibrant, transitional youth culture and clubbing scene in London during the 1980s.

Cannon features as a model in two of the Robyn Beeche pieces in Gallery 4, as part of Still Undead, and Sissons designed the costumes.

Free. Drop in. Gallery seating and hearing loops available.

Scarlett Cannon is best known as a model and muse. Aged just 18 she started The Cha Cha Club in 1981, and went on to become a model working with a range of respected designers including Mugler and Gaultier in the 80s, and more recently with designer Gareth Pugh. One of the most photographed faces of the 80s, images of her fearless, uncompromising style continue to inspire today. A recent exhibition entitled Scarlett Woman, celebrating her as muse, featured the work of 23 well known respected artists - photographers, painters, sculptors, illustrators and film makers.

Juliana Sissons is Lecturer in Fashion and Knitwear design at the Nottingham Trent University. From winning the 1978 International Menswear Award for best design, with an androgynous popstar outfit, as a student at Loughborough College of Art, to running her own 1980s shop, ‘Call Me Madam’ in London’s Heaven nightclub; specialising in dresses for men and costume design for nightclub personalities; playing with androgyny as a design tool has been an ongoing feature in Sissons' work. Designs sold to dance groups Hot Gossip and Zoo on the BBC’s Top of the Pops and commissions were taken for pop videos from stars such as Adam Ant and Toya Wilcox.
