1525: Ink play - From Nature to Mark Session 1
Does ink begin long before the mark?
Working with earth, charcoal, plant matter, pigments and water, local artist Milee (Feng-Ru) Lee creates handmade inks and drawing tools, allowing the materials to shape the process.
These two sessions explore an experimental practice of ‘Ink Play’ reflecting on the relationship between nature, material and mark-making inspired by the work of currently exhibiting artists Sarah Cunningham and Julia Isídrez.
Through looking, gathering, mixing, making and waiting, familiar ways of drawing and writing are opened up to chance and experimentation. Calligraphy moves beyond the readable word, while ink becomes an active material that bleeds, pools, fades and travels across the surface.
At the heart of these sessions is a conversation between nature, material and the hand - an invitation to slow down, experiment and discover what happens when we allow the material to lead.
We recommend attending both sessions if you're able to make sure you get the most out of the series but if you can only attend one, that's fine too! To book onto the second session click here.
