We are pleased to celebrate the contributions, resilience and creativity of refugees in the UK. Marking the 20 year anniversary of Refugee Week 2018, we will be hosting a range of events on 18-24 June at Nottingham Contemporary.


District 9 (2009)

Come and join us for a screening of District 9, a sci-fi that tells the story of an alien race forced to flee their planet and live in slum-like conditions on earth. Set in Johannesburg, the film explores themes of social integration, humanity and ultimately friendship. In English with captions. Free. This screening is in partnership with Communities Inc. Layers – An Exhibition

Wed 20 Jun – Thu 21 Jun, 10am-5pm

Visit this two-day exhibition which features artwork created in partnership with local organisations and projects. The exhibition features mixed media and poetry and highlights the talents, contributions and personal journeys of members of Nottingham's international community.

The exhibition will officially open with presentation from the artists on Wed 20 June, 10:30–11:30am.


Nottingham Refugee Week Finale Celebration

Sat 23 Jun, 8-11pm

Join us in the Café.Bar (downstairs) for this year’s finale celebration featuring live music, art and an interactive drumming workshop. Drop in for a dance to the sounds of Afro Manding, a dynamic band from West Africa who fuse traditional and modern styles, and World Jam who are a diverse local collective who celebrate culture and language through poetry and music. Free entry.
