Francis Upritchard

Francis’ Upritchard’s solo exhibition, A Hand of Cards, took place between 21 July and 30 September 2012, and included a substantial body of new works.  New figures and vessels made indirect reference to medieval myth, as well as to the exhibition of works by Alfred Kubin that took place at Nottingham Contemporary at the same time. A selection of early works by Upritchard, reflecting her long-standing interest in natural history and museology, infiltrated the spaces occupied by Kubin’s drawings.

For this exhibition Upritchard also collaborated with her husband, master furniture maker and designer Martino Gamper, in order to produce the plinths on which her figures and objects stood. Upritchard consistently draws the specific skills of other artists and makers into the production of her work, and this includes her frequent engagement with fiction-writers. For A Hand of Cards Ali Smith authored a new short story, also entitled A Hand of Cards, published within the two parallel exhibitions’ shared catalogue.
