Alfred Kubin

‘The Other Side’ was the first major UK exhibition of the work of Alfred Kubin (1877-1959). It took place between 21 July and 30 September 2012, in parallel with Francis Upritchard’s solo exhibition, ‘A Hand of Cards’.

Kubin was born in Austria and is considered as an important representative of the Symbolist and Expressionist movements. The focus of 'The Other Side' was Kubin’s prolific early period, when he produced drawings executed in a delicate, atmospheric ink wash technique. Produced at the turn of the twentieth century, his exquisite, yet nightmarish black and white drawings came both from his own imagination and the process of illustrating works by writers including Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Edgar Allan Poe.
