Thomas Demand

‘Model Studies’, Thomas Demand’s exhibition at Nottingham Contemporary took place between 28 January and 15 April 2012, and was the result of Demand’s residency at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles. There, he discovered the archive of John Lautner, the celebrated architect who designed glamorous and curvaceous homes that have also served as sets to iconic movies. Model Studies, the new series that gave the exhibition its title, is based on 12 architectural models discovered in the Lautner archive.

Demand is widely recognised for images that capture paper models, of architectural interiors and other built environments that are painstaking re-enactments of the spatial backdrops of significant scenes such as the Florida counting station where a contested vote led to the election of George W. Bush as opposed to Al Gore. With Model Studies, Demand photographed, for the first time, models that were not his own.
