Marvin Gaye Chetwynd

Taking place between 25 January and 23 March 2014, this was the first solo exhibition of Chetwynd’s work within a public institution in the UK. The majority of the works started life as hand-made sets or costumes, and were presented around two large-scale props, Catbus (2010) and Brainbug (2011).

Cat Bus had previously appeared in A Tax Haven Run by Women (Frieze Projects, Frieze Art Fair, 2010), and the Starship Troopers-inspired Brain Bug first formed part of Home Made Tasers (New Museum, New York, 26 October 2011 – 01 January 2012). At Nottingham Contemporary the Brain Bug was re-animated by episodes of low and high-energy performance, while the Catbus was converted into a video lounge used by visitors watching documentation of the artist’s works.

The exhibition also encompassed a newly commissioned performance, The Green Room, which drew from the artist’s research into Nottingham’s extensive cave system - where sequences that will become part of Chetwynd’s forthcoming work Hermito’s Children 2 were also filmed. While the exhibition emphasised Chetwynd’s central orientation and association with performative or otherwise event-based forms of practice and her use of ephemeral or informal materials such as paper, cardboard and cloth, it also included the painted brass sculpture Nothing in No Space (2011) and a series of oil paintings on paper, Bat Opera #37 – 38 (2005).
