Interconnect

A creative research project with the YMCA

Nottingham Contemporary Collaborated with the YMCA on the ‘Interconnect’ project, which focused on the design and production of artworks for the YMCA hostel community. Due to a successful capital bid from Land Aid, YMCA Nottinghamshire was able to refurbish part of the city centre 111 bed homeless hostel complex.

Nottingham Contemporary’s associate artists, Gillian Brent and Ben Harriott, offered creative ways to give the hostel more of a ‘homely’ feel and to create a usable, welcoming accommodation for young, homeless people within the City centre grade 2 listed building. The project also aimed to help residents to further develop life skills such as communication, team working and leadership as well as new artistic skills, all of which could aid the residents when adopting independent lifestyles.

There was no one single direction for the artistic outcome but instead the project aimed to create work that had several functions: to respond to the building, its people and places, as well as inspiring the hostel community to engage in the arts. Working within the hostel itself the artists lead a creative consultation process with residents, staff, board of trustees and public users. From these beginnings art work was designed directly from the ideas of the residents with a mind to link up pathways between usable spaces within the hostel, acting as a focus point for improved cohesion within the hostel and providing a transformative experience for those taking part. These artworks are a legacy for the project and inform future projects combining the work the YMCA with the arts and were exhibited as an end of project celebration event at Nottingham Contemporary.

As an additional aspect to ‘Interconnect’ Nottingham University has been involved in a research project entitled 'What is Home?', inviting residents to contribute in order to understand what home would be like to a homeless person.
