Nottingham Contemporary

Freedom of expression is a fundamental part of our society. Our artistic and educational programmes may inspire, illuminate, challenge, and, at times, even unsettle or offend. We defend and encourage the freedom to present such programmes. Where debates arise from our exhibitions and events, we welcome public discussion and debate with the belief that such discussion is integral to the experience of the art.

We understand that our exhibitions and events can inspire all kinds of responses. As such, staff from across our institution meet to anticipate art works or events that may provoke strong reactions and collectively plan to ensure visitors have appropriate information about what is on view, both to put the work in context and to support understanding of artistic and curatorial decisions. If a visitor is uncomfortable with an artwork we encourage you to discuss with us.
