Research Ideas for Exhibition: Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz

Since the emergence of queer theory in the 1990s performance has been a fixture of how queers were able to make sense of both inequality and normativity. Performance both as a site of resistance and critique continues to shape the political and radical possibilities of queer art in ways that question the power attached to an idea of what is ‘normal’. In InMemoriam to Identity, Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz look back at the history of performing queerly, connecting to Kathy Acker, while remaining resolute in the contemporary moment in seeking to queerly intervene in the political questioning of identity and being.

Gary Needham is senior lecturer in Film and Television Studies, Nottingham Trent University. He is the author of Brokeback Mountain (2010) and co-editor of Warhol in Ten Takes (2013), Queer TV (2009), and Asian Cinemas (2006). He is an editor of the journal Film, Fashion and Consumption and is currently working on two Warhol book projects: Factory Girl/Factory Films: Edie Sedgwick and the Films of Andy Warhol and The Andy Warhol Reader
