8pm - Sarah Bennett Duo/Quartet

Sarah’s band has performed at jazz festivals and venues nationally, including the Brecon, Manchester, Cheltenham, Southport and Marlborough festivals, and has also appeared at John Dankworth and Cleo Laine’s venue, The Stables, in Wavendon. The group’s London gigs include the National Portrait Gallery and the National Theatre.

Leeds College of Music and Guildhall ex-alumnus Curt Shaw is a guitarist much in demand on the Northern jazz scene, and was the guitarist in the Kenny Wheeler Big Band at Guildhall.

Sarah has put words to Curt’s original tunes that reflect the English nature of the band; a failed love affair in an English seaside town, a blues homage to a downbeat private detective (Frank Marker from the old TV series “Public Eye”) and the set will also include contemporary jazz classics from the likes of Kenny Wheeler and Norma Winstone and some bossa nova tunes in Brazilian Portuguese.

A track from the band’s first CD, “Willow’s Song” was played on the late Humphrey Lyttleton’s BBC Radio 2 ‘Best of Jazz’ programme, and Geoffrey Smith also chose a track from the same CD to play on Radio 3’s ‘Jazz Record Requests’ in 2004.

9.30pm Karen Lake’s Impressions

Impressions is a classic vocal led jazz quintet inspired by the monsters of be-bop and the sultry jazz divas. Very much an interactive band, they pay close attention to improvising throughout the song and the solos with the textures and dynamics. Karen’s instinctual musical ear enables her to convey the beauty of the combined melody and lyrics with genuine emotion.

Karen Lake – vocals
Pete Lyons – tenor saxophone
Jez Matthews – piano
Richard Keates – double bass
Brian Bestall – drums

Impressions have recently launched their debut album, No Moon At All – an eclectic mix of original and standard vocal jazz compositions inspired by the jazz greats. Available to buy on the day!

“Shulie a bop is very exciting. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the whole CD. You should be proud of this. Well done!”
Anita Wardell, jazz singer

“Varied and convincing…a potent musical line up”
David Dunn, The Sheffield Star

“A great band who understands that jazz is poetry for the soul!”
Ian McMillan, poet
