"Much ado about Basaglia"

by Radio Fragola Gorizia

26 Jan 2018

An evening of radio performance by Radio Fragola Gorizia (Italy), including films, a live radio broadcast and discussion.

Focusing on relationships between art and language, the event will explore the revolutionary fights against mental institutionalization born with Franco Basaglia in 1969 in Italy. It is freely inspired by Walter Benjamin’s “Radau um Kasperl” (“Much ado about Kasper”). Firstly produced as a radio-drama and translated from German to Italian, it was later re-made with images and English subtitles.

Radio Fragola Gorizia is active since 2016 in Gorizia's former asylum, now known as “Parco Basaglia” and is based on the legacy of Franco Basaglia’s cultural and artistic movement.

Previous works include: “B come Basaglia”, a podcast about the ex asylum archive's recovery and the connections between this project and Basaglia's history during his stay in Gorizia and the radio-drama “Tanto Chiasso Per Arlecchino”.

Radio Fragola Gorizia is active since 2016 in Gorizia's former asylum, now known as “Parco Basaglia”. This project is based on another nearby radio, Radio Fragola in Trieste, born thanks to the important cultural and artistic movement whose leader has been Franco Basaglia.
The Radio is supposed to be an actual location for meetings, team-working and creation, to produce web spreaded podcasts. It exists thanks to the collaboration between health workers, patients, volunteers that gravitate around the activities promoted by the Center for Mental Health. It is also willing to  connect all the realities of the city, such as volunteering associations, third sector, youth, immigrants, fighting off the prejudice and crossing the line between normality and madness.
