To celebrate the spirit of invention in Klaus Weber’s exhibition we have in collaborated with the University of Nottingham’s Technology Transfer department, for an afternoon ‘Inventors Clinic’.
The clinic will bring together experts from a variety of fields, who will be on hand to give free, impartial, practical and business advice to anyone with an invention or idea they want to get off the ground.
Experts in the following fields will be on hand to give advice:
Technology- Dr George Rice, technology transfer expert, University of Nottingham
Digital – Dr Sue Jones, HORIZON Digital economy hub at University of Nottingham
Patents – Dr Simon Cooper, Adamson Jones Patent Agency
Health – Dr Kim Hardie, Associate Professor and inventor, University of Nottingham
3D Design – Anna Pickering, The One Off Design Agency
Environment – Dr Gérald Busca, Environmental Technology Centre, University of Nottingham
Business – Paul Yeomans, Business Engagement and Innovation Services, University of Nottingham
There is no need to book to attend this clinic, please just drop in to The Space between 1-4pm and speak to the relevant expert for your enquiry.
Don’t have an invention but would like to find out more?
The University of Nottingham technology demonstrator will be on display for you to learn more about and interact with. Inventions included are: Heart rate monitor, Colour changing window films, Swirly pipes, Glo-yo hand hygiene training device.
This is a great opportunity to see what the scientific talent based here in Nottingham has produced and get inspired to invent your own!
Expert Biographies:
Dr George Rice - Technology
Dr George Rice is a member of the University of Nottingham Technology Transfer team. George’s background is in environmental and process engineering and received training in technology transfer as a MEDICI fellow following a series of post doctoral research for the British nuclear Industry. In 2008 George joined the team to develop and manage the unique Technology Demonstrator and manages a portfolio of commercial opportunities and other special projects. George also establishes and manages collaborative relationships between research groups and industrial collaborators. In 2010 George he recognised as the PraxisUnico ‘newcomer of the year’.
Dr Sue Jones - Digital
Dr Sue Jones works in the Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute at the University of Nottingham. Her job is to link industry with our research projects so we can work together for mutual benefit. Sue came from many years working in industry before returning to academia to do a PhD, where she developed an interest in transferring research outputs into the real world!
Simon Cooper – Patents
Simon Cooper is a UK and European Patent Attorney, and a director of a Adamson Jones, a firm of patent and trade mark attorneys based in BioCity in Nottingham. Simon has been with the firm for 10 years, since graduating from the University of Manchester with a Masters Degree in Physics. He handles patent applications on behalf of companies and individuals across a wide range of technologies, including inventions in the fields of respiratory equipment, inhalers, photographic accessories, lighting technology and construction machinery, to name but a few.
Dr Kim Hardie – Health
Following an international career developing the understanding of mechanisms that bacteria use to cause disease, Dr Hardie leads a research team at the University of Nottingham to look at how bacteria communicate with each other and secrete the toxins they use to attack their host. Most recently, her research has moved into finding ways to prevent the spread of infections by designing interactive educational devices to improve hand hygiene. With a multidisciplinary team Dr Hardie has designed the Glo-you, a novel toy that teaches children how to wash their hands.
Anna Pickering - Design
Anna Pickering is an experienced 3D designer, who works for The One Off in Melbourne, Derbyshire. She designs commercial retail and museum/exhibition spaces as well as interactive toys and other 3D objects. Her favourite colour is yellow.
Dr Gérald Busca - Technology
Dr Gérald Busca graduated in physical chemistry and has specialised in environmental technologies, becoming an expert in membrane filtration systems. Dr Busca has developed great expertise in energy and resource efficiency through a multitude of projects over the years. Additionally Dr Busca is expert in technology integration and is interested in sustainable development looking at the engineering and business aspects of environmental issues.
Paul Yeomans - Business
Paul Yeomans works at the University of Nottingham within the Business Engagement and Innovation Services team. He is Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) Manager and manages diverse projects with both local and national businesses across the University with a total value of around £2.6million. KTP have worked with businesses ranging from local architects and small manufacturers through to multinational aerospace and pharmaceutical businesses. Prior to joining the University Paul held a number of posts in the engineering and manufacturing industries including; Design, Technical Sales and Market Analysis.
