Free Courses for Nottinghamshire County Residents

In partnership with Bright Ideas Nottingham and Nottinghamshire County Council these courses are aimed at Nottinghamshire County Residents.

Refreshments (including lunch on daytime courses) are provided. Help with transport costs may be available to those on means tested benefits/low income.

At the first session of every course, students design the course with the tutor to ensure that it covers the subjects that you want. All courses will enable you to build your confidence, make new contacts and feel more positive about yourself and your future. No previous experience or knowledge is required. All courses provide support to students to help you get the most out of your time with us.

Social Justice in Nottinghamshire Course

Wednesdays 17, 24, 31 May and 7 June10am-3.30pm

Nottinghamshire has a rich history of protests, riots and rebellions. This course explores some of the social justice movements currently active in the city, their contributions and successes and how they can work together to realise social justice for all county citizens. We have guest speakers from a range of social justice groups. The course focuses on volunteering roles in social justice groups and will include practical activities the planning of a hypothetical protest.


Nottinghamshire Black History Course

Wednesdays 17, 24, 31 May, 7, 14, 21, 28 June and 5 July, 6-8.30pm

Brightside team: Panya Banjoko & Lisa Robinson.

Learn about the rich history and heritage of Nottinghamshire and the contributions of our African and African-Caribbean communities to our county.  Delve with us into the Nottingham Black Archives and learn heritage skills to enable you to research, explore and interpret historical data and records. Meet and share your ideas for activities and projects for the Nottingham Black History Society. We will also identify volunteering roles and opportunities in heritage groups/projects in Nottinghamshire.


The Rise of the Black Panthers Course - CANCELLED!

Wednesdays 14, 21, 28 June and 5 July, 10am-3.30pm

Brightside Team: Anthony Olatunji and Lisa Robinson.

An introduction to the role and rise of the Black Panthers.  How  and perhaps more crucially why did they come about?  The course will discuss aspects of the movement such as The Panthers’ influence internationally as symbols of self defence and rebellion and also how they have helped shape the discussion on equality and civil rights globally. We look at the rise of the New Black Panthers and how such groups are undermined as well as the construction of the idea of ‘the enemy within’. The course will also look at how volunteering roles and contributions support today’s social justice groups.
