The Rebirth of the Protest Song in the Era of #BlackLivesMatter

Music has played a key role in the angry response to racist policing in contemporary America. Nick Heffernan, lecturer in American and Canadian Studies at the University of Nottingham, plays and discusses some examples and asks whether the protest song is enjoying an artistic and political renaissance.

Nick Heffernan is a lecturer in Film and American Studies at the University of Nottingham. He is the author of Capital Class and Technology in Contemporary American Culture and co-editor of Culture, Environment and Eco-Politics. He teaches courses on American popular music and has published articles on American music, film and popular culture.
