“Black Man Struggle”: Jamaican Pop from Mento to Dancehall

Patrick Henderson surveys Jamaican pop music from the 1950s to the present day, playing and discussing examples of mento, ska, reggae and dancehall and considering their cultural significance.

Patrick Henderson is a doctoral student in the department of American and Canadian Studies at the University of Nottingham. He is writing his thesis on the Jamaican dancehall music scene in New York City. Patrick wrote his masters dissertation on Detroit Techno music. In his spare time he plays in a band, DJs and makes radio programmes.
