The Space

In this pioneering film, Ousmane Sembene uses a simple yet devastating story to explore the dynamics of the immediate post-colonial period. Diouana moves from her home in Dakar, Senegal to an apartment on the French Riviera. Expecting a comfortable and respected position as a live-in nanny she is instead treated, by the French couple who employ her, as maid, cook - and exotic trophy.

Nottingham Contemporary’s public programme is jointly funded by Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham.
