Fourth Drawer Down

An exhibition concept by Julia Muggenburg

18 Oct 2014 - 07 Dec 2014

Contemporary jewellery designer Julia Muggenburg is interested in how art, self-adornment and historic and archaeological finds can inform one another to give a kaleidoscopic view of what she terms as eccentric Britain. Muggenburg is interested in exploring the notion of identity through her personal collection of curios and found objects, and the mechanism of the wunderkammer or cabinet of curiosities as a contemporary idea and method of display. Historically, the wunderkammer was seen as a microcosm of the world, presenting objects, specimens, diagrams, and illustrations from many disciplines. Muggenburg’s collection reflects upon the intersection between art and anthropology.

Raised in Düsseldorf, Germany, Julia Muggenburg moved to London to study fine art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Muggenburg founded Belmacz Gallery in London in 2000 as a space to invite artists and friends to collaborate with her on the presentation of her jewellery designs alongside art and objects, and it has since featured an annual exhibition programme of both solo and group shows by contemporary artists.
